If you miss the way your breasts looked before having children or losing a lot of weight, Dr. Onelio Garcia Jr. can help. A breast lift also called “mastopexy”, typically involves lifting, shaping and tightening the breasts. In many cases a breast implant is used during the lifting procedure to provide more volume and fullness to the lifted breast. Many patients however benefit from only a breast lift without the use of an implant since they may already have an adequate amount of tissue to provide a full and perky breast with a more youthful contour. The procedure also corrects the size and shape of the areolas.
Surgical Details
Breast lift is performed as an outpatient procedure atDr. Garcia’s fully accredited surgical center. Typically, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, provided by our experienced, board certified anesthesiologist.
Dr. Garcia selects the appropriate incision pattern based on the amount of excess skin and tissue that needs to be removed and repositioned. Some women choose to have implants placed during the breast lift operation, and this can influence the incision pattern used. The options are:
- Perioareolar or “doughnut”-shaped incision made around the edge of the areola
- Keyhole or “lollipop”-shaped incision made around the areola and extending vertically down to the breast crease
- “Anchor”-shaped incision made around the areola, extending vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease
Through the incision, Dr. Garcia lifts, tightens and reshapes the breast tissue to improve the contour and firmness of the breasts. He repositions the nipple and areola to a more youthful height on the center of the breast. Enlarged or downward-pointing areolas are treated if necessary. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened around the newly shaped breast.
The breasts are bandaged with a special surgical bra that puts slight pressure on the tissues as they heal. Strenuous movement, exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided during the first few weeks of recovery. Most patients take a week off from work to recover.
The breasts will look better almost immediately after surgery, with results continuing to improve during the healing process. The scars along the incision lines fade over time, but may never completely disappear. Scar treatment is instituted approximately 2 weeks after the surgery to help fade the scars to the best appearance possible. This is usually a good tradeoff for the improvement in breast shape and position.

Candidacy is discussed during consultation with Dr. Garcia. He will examine your breasts and ask you what you hope to achieve during this appointment. Generally, breast lift candidates are women who:
- Have flat or shapeless breasts that sag on the chest
- Hope to achieve perkier and better shaped breasts
- Have reasonable expectations of surgery
- Are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
- Do not smoke

This unique tool allows the patient to review the consultation with Dr. Garcia while reviewing high-definition patient photos of the surgical areas being considered. The smart screen allows for makings and comments to be placed on the photos for illustration purposes. At the end of the consultation the patient receives their private password giving them access to their personal electronic Touch MD file. This allows the patient to review their consultation from the privacy of their home computer. Frequently educational videos (from our library of over 200 procedural videos), are uploaded to the patient’s file to further educate the patient on the procedure that they are considering.
