Breast Augmentation in Miami

If you, like many women, are unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, you’re probably tired of using quick-fixes like padded bras to fill out your top half. Being unhappy with your breasts can affect your self-esteem and prevent you from enjoying life experiences — like wearing a swimsuit or low cut garments showing chest cleavage — due to embarrassment. If you’re dissatisfied with the look or feel of your breasts and are seeking a permanent solution, Dr. Onelio Garcia Jr. can help you to determine if breast augmentation is right for you. As an experienced and highly trained plastic surgeon, he has performed thousands of breast augmentations, using either silicone or saline breast implants to add fullness and shape to breasts. Whether you’re looking for a small or more significant change in your chest appearance, read on to find out if this surgery fits your needs.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?

The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate for breast augmentation is through a thorough pre-operative evaluation. However, here are some general guidelines that determine whether someone is a good candidate for this surgery:

  • Is in good health, with no serious medical conditions
  • Unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts
  • Desires added volume and lift for breasts that sag
  • Wants to fix asymmetry (where one breast is larger than the other)
  • Has breasts that have finished developing
  • Is at least 18 years old (for saline implants)
  • Is at least 22 years old (for silicone implants)

Implant Choices

Dr. Garcia offers saline, silicone and shaped implants for his breast augmentation procedures. There are different benefits associated with each type of implant, and Dr. Garcia will discuss your implant options with you during your consultation.

Saline breast implants are implanted into the body empty and then filled, using sterile salt water and filling them to the desired volume once in place. The benefits of choosing saline implants include the fact that they are placed into the body empty, requiring smaller incisions — and, consequently, a smaller scar — than silicone implants. They are also less expensive than silicone implants, and since saline implants are filled by the doctor, there is more control over their exact size.

Silicone implants are filled with thick silicone gel; these implants are placed in the body pre-filled. The benefit of silicone implants is that, when compared with saline implants, they look and feel the most like natural breasts. Shaped implants (Gummy Bear) come in a variety of size and shapes. They are slightly firmer and less mobile than gel implants. They also come in a variety of projections that affect the visible breast cleavage.

Choice of Incision Points

Along with choosing implants, you and Dr. Garcia will also discuss where to place the incisions through which the implants will be inserted. The location of the incision will depend on your anatomy and aesthetic desires, as well as which type of implant is being used. The three incision points used during breast augmentation are periareolar (through the dark border around the nipple), inframammary (in the breast fold) or transaxillary (through the armpit).

The periaereolar incision is made on the areola (the darker-colored skin around the nipple), and so the subsequent scar is unnoticeable. Women who are planning to have children and are considering this incision point should consider the possibility that it may cause damage to the milk glands and difficulties breastfeeding.

The inframammary incision is made under the breast, in the breast fold (where the breast mound meets the chest wall). The scar is hidden under the breast. Many women who don’t want to risk the possible breastfeeding complications resulting from a periareolar incision prefer this incision option.

The third incision option, the transaxillary approach, is placed under the arm, in the armpit. This incision point creates a scar that is well hidden in the arm fold, and is ideal for the placement of saline implants, since they are placed through the incision point empty and then directly and easily filled through this incision point.

Implant Placement Options

implantsThe third consideration that Dr. Garcia will discuss with you during your breast augmentation consultation is the choice of implant placement, or where the implant will be placed in relation to the chest muscle. Dr. Garcia places breast implants in one of two locations: subglandularly (or over the pectoral muscle) or subpectoraly (or under the pectoral muscle). There are factors to consider for each type of placement option, and these will be discussed with you further during your consultation.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes approximately one hour. . The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia so that the patient can be comfortable for the duration of the procedure. He will then create an incision in either the underarm area, breast fold or areola and place the implant. Dr. Garcia will usually position the implant under the pectoral muscle and the chest wall or in rare occurrences under the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle. Once the implant has been properly positioned, the incisions will be closed using a plastic closure. Finally, a soft surgical bra will be placed over the breasts.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

breastBreast augmentation patients can expect a certain amount of discomfort following the procedure. The doctor will prescribe pain medication to ensure that the patient is comfortable during the first few days. There will also be swelling and bruising on the chest, which usually subsides within the first week to ten day. It is recommended that the patient sleeps on their back and with their upper body elevated to help with the swelling. Lifting should be avoided for the first two weeks post-surgery. Most women can return to work and regular exercise after one week.
