Liposuction FAQ – Questions and Answers
Does liposuction hurt?
The procedure itself is not painful because anesthesia is used. However, some post-operative discomfort is normal. Everyone is different and tolerates pain differently, so it is difficult to say how much. Dr. Garcia prescribes oral medication to soothe any post-operative pain.
Can liposuction be combined with additional body sculpting procedures?
Yes, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with another body sculpting procedure. Most often, it is performed to enhance the results of tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift or arm lift surgery.
How much does liposuction cost?
Liposuction is tailored to the specific needs of the individual, so the cost of liposuction varies by patient. The cost is based on variables including:
- the size and number of treated areas
- the technology used
- whether liposuction is combined with an additional procedure
What are the side effects of liposuction?
The most common side effects of liposuction are swelling, bruising and skin irregularities. Other side effects include complications from the anesthesia, infection, bleeding and scarring. The best thing you can to do reduce your risk of side effects is to work with an experienced body sculpting, plastic surgeon such as Dr. Garcia.
Are liposuction results permanent?
Fat cells that are removed with liposuction do not come back. However, not all of the fat cells in the treatment area are removed (this would compromise the appearance of the treated area). If you gain weight after liposuction, the remaining fat cells can grow in size. To permanently maintain results, it is essential to avoid significant weight gain.
Is there an alternative to traditional liposuction?
Yes, Dr. Garcia offers a variation of traditional liposuction known as VASER liposuction. VASER uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat in the desired area so it is easier to suction from the body with less trauma and more precision. VASER treatment leads to less blood loss and less swelling than traditional liposuction.
What is the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck?
Liposuction is the less invasive procedure of the two. Tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, whereas liposuction only removes fat. Tummy tuck also tightens the abdominal muscles that have been stretched out or weakened by pregnancy. Often liposuction is included in a tummy tuck procedure to contour the sides of the abdomen, the lower back, buttocks or thighs.
How long is the recovery from liposuction?
Everyone heals differently, and the recovery can take one to three weeks depending on the patient and the volume removed. Generally Dr. Garcia advises patients to take about one week off from work to recover. It can take up to six weeks for all post-operative symptoms (including residual swelling) to resolve.
